Yesterday despite rain predictions, a friend of mine and I took a day off and rode our bikes to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is about a two hour ride and we scanned the weather maps before leaving. The ride to the parkway had its share of on again off again light showers, but nothing that was a problem. At one point, I almost pulled over to put on the rain gear, but did not and five minutes later the rain had stopped. When we got to the bottom of the mountains the tops were clear, almost blue skies. We enjoyed some twisties going up and down the mtns for about an hour and then found ourselves at Maybry Mill. Just wanted to walk a minute, look at the map and find a place to have lunch. While there, it seemed like every rider (about 12 in all) stopped by to chat and talk about the rain. Apparently going south would put you in the the thick of it, but where we were and north, everything was fine.
Though it was only five minutes at that place, it was great to meet and talk with all of the other riders. No attitudes, just friendship and common interests. Another reason I like to ride.
Oh and the twisties were huge fun!! Just watch out for one thing – budget times are hitting road maintenance – tar and stone is being used in a big way to patch roads. That loose gravel is not to be played with – respect the road conditions.
