Hello All;
Well, the weather here in the Northeast is starting to get chilly. We’ve had some cooler than normal temps during the day with some frost overnight. Right now, we’re in the midst of yet another Nor’easter.
Last weekend, I was feeling pretty good and decided I would do a few errands via my scooter before the weather got colder. I hadn’t really been out because of my arm and I wanted to give the battery a good charge. I was on a stretch of four lane road called the White Horse Pike. This road is divided by a concrete barrier through the busier business districts.
As I was riding, I was behind a line of cages and we were moving along at around 45-50 MPH. In this particular section of roadway, there is a line of motels we call motel row with openings between the concrete barriers for pedestrians to cross from one side to the other, mostly to get to a convenience store called WaWa. Now, I know this isn’t nice, but I would like to interject that the majority of the inhabitants of most of these motels have the IQ of your standard kitchen mop.
We were flowing fine when all of a sudden, the cage in front of me slams on the brakes because the cage in front of him slammed on the brakes, etc, etc…well, I put my brakes on hard and locked them up…I felt myself starting to lose the scoot and since my heart had already stopped, I knew this was it.
Whether or not this is right or wrong, my left foot went down as the back tire swung around to my right and I did a complete 360 degree donut barely keeping my scooter righted. I actually felt my calf scrape the ground and have the pics to prove it. My pants saved me a good deal of injury and luckily, I only needed some minor first aid from my husband with Neosporin, but I know it could have been much worse.
Just for more info, I was wearing full gear and Roadcrafter pants.
My scooter has some minor scrape marks on the running board and a little scrape on the tupperware, but I do have to say I was scared and I am still a bit shaken.
All of this was caused by a pedestrian who came through the divider right into the middle of the lane. How he did not get hit, I will never know.
Did I handle this correctly? Could I have done something differently? Please, your advice would be more than welcome.
